I would like to share with you the benefits of working from home according to how I see it. First let me start by saying that it is a big headache.

Yes you read right, it is a big, enormous headache.  I can’t believe that sane people will willingly put themselves through it.  

•       You have to get out of your warm bed and wash; that alone sets me off.

•       You have to make breakfast; that sucks a great deal.

•   You have to walk (yes I said it) to your home office.

•     Your car does not accumulate those hectic miles (kilometres if you are not in USA) and you save on petrol.

•    You have to turn on your computer and follow a rigid schedule of follow up emails and daily tasks designed by the BIG boss (you.) 

Yes, I am making fun of a very serious occupation. It’s not to demean it but to show that routine is very much an important part of working from your home office. I respect anyone who starts to work at home because they definitely do not indulge in flights of fancy like those who are in an office cubicle working for somebody else. It is possible to work at home and to maintain office discipline. 

You have to follow the following rules if you want to succeed and stay close to your family and enjoy amazing flexibility: 

1.      Choose your focus or explore exactly what you are passionate about. (Intimate interest in your career or passion will keep you going while money may be scarce, trust me money will be REALLY tight at first.)

•     The object of working from home is to work smarter and efficiently.

•       Money should NOT be your driving force. It will get you sidetracked.

•     You WILL succeed online but will you carry on evolving?

 2.      Go and start doing whatever you need to get started. Do not procrastinate.

•     Read that book or course 

•    Buy that computer 

It is the best online course by far Buy the best courses and don’t waste your time with cheap ones or e-books. “Billionaires value time more than money because lost time cannot be recovered by anyone, no matter how rich or poor” 

It covers the perfect mental state you need to become independent and the resources you need to build your business (especially website software) are given to you. I enjoyed the course immensely and the best investment I ever made was in giving me the best advice contained in the 7 week course. 

Once you are ready to start working from home you need to do the following: 

3.      Set your work days apart from your weekends, leave days and off days on a year planner. (They must not meld) 

4.      Set a Goal list for the week, the month, 6 months and the year. These goals are NOT New Year’s resolutions but a To Do list that must be done. Revise it every beginning of the week and every night before you sleep. Do not make changes on the List during “work at home office hours”. (You will get distracted. Last night is the deadline)  

5.      Get up the same time every morning when you are working. (No sleep ins, Ever. Remember your passion will demand you get up smiling every morning to do your required tasks for the day) 

6.      Wash completely and get dressed completely. (This is important. You must respect yourself enough to take a quick shower and get dressed well because answering the phone or writing an email in the nude/pyjamas does come through in your words. Try it and note the difference) 

7.      Start working to complete your To Do list, immediately, when you enter your office. (Remember do not re-write it, complete the tasks and do them well.) 

•      Do not redecorate your work desk. It’s a waste of time! 

•   Switch off your phone and let it go to voice mail or fax line unless if that is your job. (But do not allow friends to call at this time) 

• Do not receive anyone at the door. 

8.      Take 15 to 30 minute breaks at 10 am at 1pm and at 4pm. Depending on what you have to do. 

•     Those breaks will help you focus and the more rigidly scheduled the better.

9.      Do not do unscheduled chores, no matter what your partner says. Remember you are your best and only employee and you would not tolerate tardiness in others. So why risk your business to mow the lawn or wash the laundry.

•       You can do the chores after completing the To Do list

 10. When you are done with the day’s To Do list you should walk away from your home office and have something to eat and drink some tea or coffee for 1 hour.  

•      Take a proper break. Do not linger. Great bosses do not linger. 

11. Come back after taking your 1 hour break to round off your day.

•      Check and Adjust your To Do list for tomorrow. 

•     Review if you will make your goals for the week.

•    You can check and answer emails only now. 

•     You can check your phone messages, only now. 

•     You can check your faxes, only now. 

12. Leave the office and go play somewhere else. You work there. Play-time must not be confused with work time. 

•      Work time è Work Very Hard 

•   Play time è Play very Hard 

This is a rigid schedule and will have an impact on your progress at home despite the overwhelming distractions. Trust me when I say day time television is a super drug, highly addictive and will ruin your chances of succeeding as a work at home professional.
